Changing your favicon in Joomla is a super easy task and can be achieved in around 5 minutes.
Step 1 create your favicon
The first thing you need to do is create a new favicon. If you already have a favicon you can skip this section, but if not the easiest way I have found is to use a website called favicon.cc
This website allows you to draw your favicon pixel by pixel, or upload an image to turn into a favicon.
I won’t go into a step-by-step instruction of how to use the website, as it’s probably not necessary for this tutorial. However I did go over this in pretty good detail in the video at the top of the page.
Step 2 change your favicon over to the new one
After you have your favicon it’s as simple as replacing one file with another in FTP.
If using FTP is not something you’re familiar with, you may wish to get a web developer to do this for you. However this change is fairly simple and you should be safe if you follow the steps to a tee.
So navigate to the root of your Joomla install through an FTP client like filezilla.
Then go to the “templates” folder and open up the template you are using on your website.
When you get inside your website’s template folder you should notice a favicon.ico file is already in there. This is most commonly the default Joomla logo that is used as the favicon on many Joomla websites.
You now want to overwrite this favicon.ico file with your new favicon.ico file.
And that’s all there is to it.
You may find your browser caches your old favicon file (like I did in the video above), if that happens simply hold “ctrl” and press the “f5” key to clear your cache and your updated favicon should appear.
