Today, as many of us are heading off on holiday leaving businesses light on staff, an IT bug has given us a whopper of a headache.
 
GPs, airports and businesses have all been hit by a bug in a software update, released by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Unfortunately this has affected the Windows operating systems.
 
This is not the first and it won’t be the last IT bug or hack to hit business.
 
At Footsteps we always recommend regular backups and updates of our client’s websites.  Whether WordPress or Joomla, keeping the core platform and all plugins up to date will drastically reduce the risks of problems. Also, it is much easier to fix an issue if you have a recent backup of your site.
 
These bugs and hacks can never be 100% protected against but, as business owners, we can mitigate our risk by keeping our websites up to date and storing several backups. Ideally backups should not be stored on the same server as the live site.
 
If you already do this yourself that’s great, but are you confident in how to restore your website from a backup? If not and you don’t have a maintenance agreement with a web developer, you could be waiting days to get your site up and running again.
 
Having a ‘disaster recovery’ plan is a great way to be sure you won’t lose sales if the worst were to happen.
